Help All Students Connect Learning to Life

Teachers play a key role in Work-Based Learning through student placements and engaging all students with real-world career exposure. Whether it’s hosting a guest speaker, organizing a tour, promoting a career fair, or connecting students to internships, you help make classroom learning relevant and future-focused.

Your Role:

Identify opportunities to engage business & industry to students
Support career conversations in the classroom
Assist with WBL forms and program expectations
Recommend potential students for placement to your WBL Coordinator or area business partners

WBL Continuum
Michigan Department of Education (MDE) – Work‑Based Learning Manual Official guidebook for procedures, compliance, and WBL standards.
Sample CTE WBL Training Agreement Template required for CTE student placements.
Sample Non‑CTE/Transition WBL Agreement For non‑CTE and special‑education transition placements.
Student Work Permits (CA‑6 / CA‑7) for minors under 18 when not covered under CTE student‑learner exemptions.
Timesheet / Hour‑Tracking Template: Needed for weekly hour logs and final placement verification (use your internal or district‑adapted sheet). Sample Timesheet
Student WBL Checklist: Compiled list of student responsibilities before, during, and after placement (paperwork, safety video, hours tracking, behavior, reflection).

Youth Employment Laws & Legal Compliance (minors must adhere to State and Federal law, & must adhere to the stricter law)

MDE Companion Document: Work‑Based Learning Experiences, Apprenticeships & Internships Program Requirements — clarifies legal obligations: training agreement contents, employer insurance, signatures, safety instruction, and documentation.
Michigan Career Development Model: A framework, guided by legislation, that engages school communities, students, and their support networks in intentional and meaningful career awareness, exploration, and preparation for all students.

Teacher Tools & Implementation Support

WBL Continuum Guides (CTE & Virtual): Helps define placement types (job shadow, internship, co-op, apprenticeship) and where each student fits in their pathway.
Placement Management Templates: Roster templates, placement logs, site‑visit logs (every 9 weeks for regular ed; every 30 days for special‑ed/transition students). Included in the sample WBL agreements.
Safety & Risk Management Tools: Checklists and required employer liability/insurance documentation (as part of training agreement).
Special Populations (IEP / Transition) WBL Guide: For students with disabilities or in transition‑to‑work programs to help guide placement and compliance. Guidance for Transitions Placements
