Work-Based Learning Starts Career Journeys
Work-Based Learning (WBL) gives students real experience with real employers. Whether students are exploring careers by hearing from a guest speaker, participating in a workplace tour or building job skills through an internship, WBL connects school to students’ futures.
Student Responsibilities
- Research careers that match your interests, skills and values
- Update your EDP regularly
- Practice your Skills 4 Success (things like collaboration, communication, personal accountability & critical thinking/problem solving skills)
- If you are interested in a WBL placement you must also:
- Track your hours and meet expectations
- Communicate with your coordinator
- Complete reflection logs (sample reflection log)
Working with their teacher or coordinator, students are responsible for finding work opportunities with employers.

I didn’t have a prior plan for after high school before entering the Capstone program, but I feel like it really helped me come out of my shell. I feel a lot less stressed when going into scary situations, and that’s because I’ve had so many supportive people around me. I didn’t expect to end up where I am right now.ChloeHolland HS & CTC Public Safety Grad
Work-based learning gave me the opportunity to get a job outside of fast food and really gain professional skills in a different industry. Working in an insurance office and strengthening those skills has given me a head start and will definitely help me in the long run with securing a good job.Adriyanna Coopersville HS & CTC Business Management Grad
At just 21, I was able to pass my journeymen test and obtain my license. The plumbing program and the work experiences I was given provided me with all the building blocks to get that.AndrewUnity Christian & CTC Plumbing Grad
