Career and Technical Education Expansion

Career and Technical Education provides students with practical skills and hands-on learning experiences that are essential for success in today’s job market. CTE programs enable students of all ages to explore various career options, earn industry-recognized certifications and gain real-world experience. These programs empower students to thrive in real-world careers and contribute to a more skilled and capable workforce, benefiting the local economy. By addressing industry needs and creating diverse pathways to success, CTE helps reduce opportunity gaps and fosters long-term community growth.

Ottawa Area ISD is actively expanding CTE programs and services to meet the growing demand from students, parents and employers across the Ottawa region. K-13 CTE programming is part of the expansion g including Careerline Tech Center, local district CTE initiatives, work-based learning opportunities, post-secondary technical education and training, corporate training programs, and career assessment and preparation services. These efforts align with our district’s strategic plan to create multiple pathways for student success, remove barriers, and ensure that every student has access to the opportunities needed to reach their full potential.

The demand for Careerline Tech Center programming has grown steadily over the years, resulting in a significant waitlist each year for 11th and 12th-grade students. The expansion addresses the increasing demand for hands-on career and technical training. By adding the East Building next door, we can serve more students and meet the growing demand for these critical programs. Over the next few years, the expansion will enable the addition of nine new programs with a goal of a 30% increase in enrollment. Fire Academy opened in the fall of 2025, and HVAC-R is scheduled to open in the fall of 2026.

OAISD has forged extensive partnerships with local high schools, expanding work-based learning support outside of Careerline Tech Center and increasing the number of students who can access these valuable experiences through their high school. The partnerships grew from six participating local districts in the 2023-24 school year to eight in the 2025-26 school year.

futurePREP’d programming empowers educators to enhance classroom experiences with increased relevance, providing students with career exposure and the opportunity to practice essential skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. The K-12 program continues to expand, offering middle and high school students even more hands-on learning experiences utilizing the creative sequence, a design thinking process, that prepares them for success in the modern workforce.

Through our CTE programs, students interact with industry professionals, mentors and peers who share their career interests. These network connections provide guidance, mentorship and job opportunities, helping students launch successful careers.

We foster partnerships with local employers and continuously evolve our CTE programs to align with current industry needs. This ensures that students are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge for the job market. By actively engaging with employers, we also help students secure higher-earning, more fulfilling job opportunities.
