Open Source Applications

Open source software is computer software whose source code is available under a license or arrangement that permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. It is often developed in a public, collaborative manner.

Word Processing/Office Suites

openoffice (Win/Mac) is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.

A free software port of to the MacOS X platform. NeoOffice is a full-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs) for Mac OS X.

AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft® Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks.

 bean Bean (Mac)

Bean is a small, simple word processor (or more precisely, a rich text editor), with many niceties added to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. Bean is powered by the same text engine as Apple's Text Edit, but it adds live word count and the ability to adjust printed margins.

GIMP (Win/Mac)
GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

Inkscape (Win/Mac)
Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Supported SVG features include shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, patterns, and grouping.
