A Great Start for every child in Michigan: Safe, healthy, and eager to succeed in school and life.
Michigan ’s State Board of Education has adopted documents that define the expectations for young children’s learning and development, and set standards for high-quality experiences and programs in early years.
The comprehensive Early Childhood Standards of Quality for Prekindergarten was developed by parents, teachers, administrators, and researchers. They provide examples of experiences and strategies for adults to use, as well as questions for them to reflect upon in order to ensure young children develop and learn.
This document is dated 2005, because none of the standards themselves have been changed, which is what the State Board of Education approves. The document does contain new information embedded in the Early Learning Expectations, giving examples of what the standard might look like in practice, as well as providing questions for reflection that could be used individually or in teams to improve practice.
