The many talents and expressions of youth ...
ART Squared is a project of the Ottawa County Juvenile Detention Center, operated by the 20th Circuit Court, Juvenile Service's Division. Many of the youth in the center seek opportunities to appropriately express themselves and are very artistic. This project was spawned by art teacher - Angie Johnson - and her students who were residents in the center.
The goal is to encourage at risk youth's artistic strengths and provide positive opportunities for self expression within the community as well as learn simple business and marketing skills.
Each chair or other art form represents thoughts, ideals, favorite themes, memories, history and peaceful places that resonate with the youth. The girls in the Lighthouse Program, a female specific treatment program housed within the Juvenile Detention Center, have taken the lead on this project. Their contribution and those of the other youth in the center, reflect time, talent, commitment and the positive effects of self expression as exemplified in each item.
